Community-based Learning (CBL) is an intentional strategy that connects what 学生 are learning in academic courses with community 和 civic engagement initiatives.

CBL:

  • Based on reciprocal 和 mutually beneficial partnerships between instructors, 学生, 和社区
  • Rooted on the belief that community members have intrinsic educational assets 和 resources to share

The goal of CBL is to address community-identified needs 和 together create positive social change. To help build a community-based learning campus, OCCE offers the following:

学习社区

公民和社区参与办公室, 与各伙伴合作, facilitates learning communities on different topics during the academic year, from early October to late April; 和 meets about twice a month.

Please see below for a short description of each learning community. Currently, the learning communities are offered in alternative academic years.

The purpose of this learning community is to discuss community engagement related theories, pedagogies 和 skills that collectively will provide “an introduction to community engagement, 设计, 实现, 评估一门课程, to advancing the craft to prepare for promotion 和 tenure as well as how to become a citizen-scholar 和 reflective practitioner.”

这个学习社区适合所有人, from those who are already experienced in community engagement to those who are curious in learning more about this high-impact educational practice.

教师参与者将讨论阅读材料, 写反思日志, 会见演讲嘉宾, 分享想法, 和 think collaboratively about 实现 community engagement into the 学生’ experience at Harvey Mudd.

This is an academic year-long learning community that starts in early Fall 和 ends in early Spring. Light refreshments or a full meal are provided at each meeting (depending on set meeting time).

Materials used to guide our learning, conversations 和 reflections are:

This learning community will be offered again in the academic year 2025-26.

在一个日益两极化的世界里, engaging constructively with those who hold different viewpoints or come from varied backgrounds is essential yet challenging. Faculty 和 staff are pivotal in fostering an inclusive learning environment 和 equipping our community to navigate complex conversations that span differences in lived experiences, 文化背景, 和观点. Our classrooms 和 other spaces serve as vital environments for these important dialogues.

In collaboration with the Office of 机构的多样性 和 the Office of Academic Affairs, 这个学习社区致力于推进民间话语.

The inaugural 跨越差异的对话学习社区 will commence in late September 2024, with an ongoing community of practice 和 reflection throughout the academic year 和 culminating in early May 2025.

During AY2024-25, this learning community will focus on preparing for the 2024 election. We will work together to develop strategies for guiding 和 engaging with 学生, 教师, 和 staff in meaningful discussions across political 和 other forms of difference both in 和 outside the classroom setting.
